Lake Malaren Golf Club

Lake Malaren Golf Club in Shanghai was certified on September 7, 2006 as the First Silver Signature Sanctuary in China and Asia.  Its two 18-hole Peter L.H. Thompson–designed golf courses were built on highly degraded land comprised of vegetables fields and factories prior to construction; natural communities had been eliminated long ago.  This project is an excellent example of successful habitat creation/restoration, with particular emphasis on lake habitats.  The project design called for the creation wildlife corridors, lakes, and native landscaping, along with elevation changes, as compared with the traditional layout of courses in Shanghai, which typically feature flat expanses of turfgrass.  Nearly 70,000 trees were planted on the private Forest Course, while the public Lakes Course features interconnected lakes, landscaped with native buffers and aquatic plants.

To conserve potable water supplies, Lake Malaren Golf Club draws water from the River Malu, a highly polluted river which runs through the property.  Audubon International assisted Lake Malaren in designing a biological treatment system which cleans-up the river water for use in golf course irrigation.  The golf courses are the only ones in the country certified through ISO90001 for Quality Management and ISO14001 for Environmental Management.

Lake Malaren Golf Club is part of a North European 19th century style resort spanning over 6.8 square kilometers, designed by SWECO FFNS from Sweden and developed by Shanghai Real Estate in cooperation with Baoshan District and Luodian Town Governments.  To learn more about Lake Malaren, visit its website at www.lakemalarengolf.com
